On the pitch, the team captain’s official duty is to lead out the team, the coin toss, and to lift the league trophy if the side wins the Premiership.

Rooney has recently worn the captain’s armband on United’s pre-season tour in the United States helping his side to win the 2014 International Champions Cup trophy in Miami, Florida.

Van Gaal is showing his trust in Rooney to be in line with him on the pitch and in the dressing room and to be able to exert pressure on officials when needed.

Rooney is a great footballer and already has the respect of his teammates and may need to go eye-to-eye with them during a game. He is expected to bind fans to United’s empowerment through their support.
